APPARENTLY THERE ARE SPOILERS HERE SO DON’T READ MY REVIEW IF YOU WANT PARTS OF THE PLOT SPOILED. Anyway, there’s something to be said for trying something different, and I guess it’s pretty easy to be caught in a gimmick or completely be put off by it. In Cloverfield’s case, the movie’s gimmick is similar to Blair Witch Project, in that it is all from the perspective of a guy with a handy cam. The movie’s ads also make it seem like there is some huge secret to the monster in the movie, but there’s really no horrible secret that you learn about it, and when they do show the creature, it’s not like there was that great of a reason to hide it, other than to sell more movie tickets over the suspense. A movie I went into with no expectation became probably my favorite movie of the year. While I loved the original movie, I felt it suffered from a hard divide midway through the movie where it changed course and focused more on a group of soldiers. The sequel works on the interesting premise of trying to figure out how to repopulate a city that was absolutely devastated by the Rage virus. Everything seems plausible, from the character’s motives to the military containment decisions, and it lives off its own merits instead of just diluting and regurgitating what made 28 Days Later so great. Add in a great soundtrack and one of the most intense opening scenes in recent memory, and you have my movie pick of the year.
6. Final Fantasy Fables: Chocobo Tales
I know this game was getting a lot of eye rolls when it first came out, but I was flat out excited to try it out. What essentially is 3 games mashed together ends up working very well. The card game plays out like a Final Fantasy turn-based battle, and looks very pretty, and is also fairly easy to learn and play. Then there are the mini-games that range from fun and addictive to tolerable, but on the whole are pretty fun. This is all tied together by an RPG action adventure-esque overworld with some cutesy but pretty graphics that are among the most solid the DS has to offer. There’s also a variety of multiplayer wifi modes that makes this an easy title to recommend.
5. Lollapalooza 2007 and the city of Chicago
While I can find some criticism in the scheduling choices, prices, overcrowding, and occasional lack of interest in certain bands, Lollapalooza was one of those experiences that you can’t help but remember. I’ve never been in a festival atmosphere of this magnitude, and just dedicating an entire weekend to listening to music all day long proves to be surprisingly great. It’s also an endurance test, as well as a balancing act, try to catch everything you want while still going out to eat and wandering the city. And sometimes even when you are at the festival, you have to make sacrifices (Modest Mouse and My Morning Jacket playing at the same time on the two furthest apart stages? Fuck you guys, seriously). However, experiencing bands I had never seen before and didn’t plan on seeing turned out to be a lot of fun, and the big bands really didn’t disappoint. Add that to seeing Chicago for the first time, going on some wonderful bike rides with my girlfriend, and eating out at some great places really made for a great weekend.
4. Hotel Dusk: Room 215
So some people would probably be quick to point out that so many other great console games came out this year, and here I am, Zach Patterson, giving out two spaces in my highly coveted top 7 to DS games! Not only DS games, but ones that probably were considered not even the best of the year! Well screw that, I didn’t play any 2007 console games enough to really deem them worthy in my list, and no one cares about my opinion anyway. But still! Hotel Dusk was definitely my favorite game of the year. A moody, somber soundtrack, fantastic writing, memorable characters, and a distinctive art style really made this game worth buying for the atmosphere alone. In addition, it offered a long, involving story that had replay value, the gameplay was fun and diverse (especially in the adventure game genre), and the novel uses of the DS made this my easy favorite of the year.
3. Phillies Win The NL East
Baseball? Seriously? Well when you follow a team for an entire year, a team who hasn’t done anything for nearly 15 years, and they finally are able to make the playoffs, it is something special. Add to the fact that they faced losing nearly every superstar on the roster for extended time at some point and were written off a dozen times as being dead in the water, and it makes it even more special. The Mets-Phillies games in August really were representative of what this team was about: being outmatched by better pitching, and just using sheer will, heart, and character (and a lot of hitting) to find a way to win. The final game of the year, the division clincher was like my world series. It was an emotional moment for the city of Philadelphia and for the sports fan in me that had long been suffering, unable to have any faith in a baseball team I grew up loving.
2. Dinosaur Jr. - Beyond
I had become a Dinosaur Jr fan based on a bargain bin copy of Without A Sound I had bought back in college a few years ago. Over the course of the next few years, I really began to love the band and picked up all their old material. When they reunited and a new album was released, I was wondering if it was even going to be any good. While Dinosaur Jr released records until 1997, this original version of the band hadn’t played together since the 80’s. Luckily, this album proves that reunion albums can be just as good, if not better than anything released before by the band. Even though this is the 8th album by Dinosaur Jr, this really feels like the 4th album, something that would have been released in an alternate world where a nasty breakup between Barlow and Mascis never happened. But really, this album is just everything that makes Dinosaur Jr great. Distorted guitars, melodic solos, J’s raspy slacker voice, and mixing in some good songs sung by Lou as well.
1. Chromelodeon - The Final Recordings/The Final Show Weekend
In April, Chromelodeon played one last show and released their final album. The band invited their fans (many of us from theshizz) to come out to the show and stay at their house for the weekend and make a big party out of it. It ended up being the best weekend of the year, and one of the most fun of my life. The Final Show was probably the best show with the most active, emotional crowd I’ve been to. The crowd came from all over, and we all came together and really connected. It was a fun weekend that I never wanted to end and cemented Chromelodeon as my favorite band. Additionally, the final album is an absolute masterpiece and definitely one of my top 5 “desert island” albums. I was so glad that it was released, as I had been going to their shows for a long time just to hear “Aluminum” and “Triangular”. Chromelodeon may be gone now, but they certainly gave me a lot to remember them by.
For some reason, I’ve been at the theaters a lot lately in the past month. Here’s some impressions of the movies I saw. These were going to be full blown reviews, but alas, I am lazy, and 4 reviews are not to be.
National Treasure: Book of Secrets
Holy hell does this movie shovel a lot of historical bullshit your way and expect you to stomach it. It’s not that the movie isn’t entertaining, because it is. It’s full of action, and the characters are all memorable enough from the first movie to have you enjoying it. But the plot is so ridiculous at times. Seriously, I mean, Nic Cage kidnaps the president effortlessly, finds a book of presidential secrets that isn’t supposed to exist, goes on one of the most ridiculous car chase scenes ever, and pretty much tracks down clues based on nothing but blind faith and rambling historical facts mixed with off the wall theories. It’a a movie that’s watchable, as long as you don’t think about it. If you liked the first one, you’ll like this. Didn’t like the first one? Hoooo boy.
Alien Vs Predator: Requiem
This is a direct sequel to the pairing of two once great franchises, and it is pretty obvious at this point that they, and this sub-franchise, are really circling the drain. Box office draw was abysmal and anyone looking for the best of Alien and Predator movies here is pretty much shit out of luck. On the plus side, this sequel isn’t awful if you have low expectations. It really works as more of a Predator movie than anything else, as the Alien creatures really are just “generic infestation in small town”, except you know what these creatures are instead of them being an original creation. The biggest issue with the movie really is just that there is no strong human presence. You have a bunch of generic pretty faces, so the cast resembles (and dies like) a slasher flick more than anything. There’s also a lot of gore to make an R rating this time around, and while some of it is kinda tasteless, they also make up for how censored the first AVP seemed. The special effects are up and down, but I give them credit for going with the rubber suits during most of the fights. Less CG the better. Anyway, bottom line is that the story is trash and some of the fight scenes are kinda poorly shot, and frankly it feels like a SciFi Channel Saturday Night Original with a bigger budget, but I’m ok with that, and its an ok movie. Just don’t expect Predator or Aliens here. We’re long past those times.
I Am Legend
This movie really got a ton of press, a lot more than I expected it to. Honestly, I really liked this movie. It had its flaws, but the first half of the movie is one of the more memorable movies I can remember in recent years. The isolation and chilling quietness of New York City deserted is something that has fascinated me since Vanilla Sky, and this takes it one step further. What is also interesting is how the movie slowly unravels that this man, who is the last man alive in NYC, who seems to have it all together is really losing it. He has lost himself in his work and slowly lost his ability to connect with others. His dog and old TV are his only portals to what life used to be. Halfway through the movie it starts to kinda collapse and lose that eerie sense of wonderment the beginning had, but all in all, it’s a pretty solid film that’s among my favorite of 2007. I just wish it was longer to explore some of the plot lines and ideas they put forth, because they leave a lot on the table that isn’t fleshed out.
BONUS: Juno
Saw this a few nights ago, and while I was expecting the typical indie movie bullshit with this, I came away pleasantly surprised. It sure starts like some Napoleon Dynamite knockoff, but the strength of Ellen Page’s character, as well as a great supporting cast really make this an enjoyable movie. I mean, there’s a lot of quick-witted one liners and funny, dirty material in this movie. And it’s great. The emotions don’t seem particularly forced, and you genuinely can understand the motives and flaws of each character. That seems like a rarity nowadays, especially in the comedy genre. It’s a movie that definitely has it’s own charm that slowly makes you love it. I’m not one to normally LOLROFL in theaters, but I nearly did a few times. But seriously, just for the fact that it made me laugh and they had a conversation about Dario Argento, Sonic Youth, and the Stooges in it, I have to say it’s a pretty great movie.
Holy crap this was probably the fastest year of my life that I can remember. Really the whole thing is kind of a blur. I got fatter, I got skinnier, my kid got older (and constantly reminded me of my own impending doom), and I didn’t fall under any large, fast moving vehicles. I would mark those all as successes. The problem I’m having is making sense of all that happened for this year end list that Zach has quietly encouraged us to write*. I started a couple lists but never felt like they had enough to see them through to the end. Also I get distracted easy. Distracted by laziness. Anyway, I decided to merge all these lists into one super list. I’m just going to jam everything in here and shove it into the intertubes for viewing on your home computer machines boxes. How could this fail? My guess is spectacularly. Please note these seven things are not in any sort of order. I couldn’t rate one over the other. My brain was just not up to it. (Plus I kind of ate and drank a lot the past couple days, so all available mental resources are being allocated to keep me from shitting myself.)
NUMBER ONE - OLD ALBUMS
“Old timey!”
American Analog Set - Know By Heart
This is one of the sweetest albums I have ever heard. I don’t mean “Bro dude, that was a sweet fucking kegstand.” either. That is a terrible description, but I can’t really think of anyway to describe it better. Everything about it has this soft, inviting feel to it. Even the up tempo songs where they do their best imitation of rocking still have this early AM on a Sunday feel to it. Honestly, it is like a hug for your ears. (Yeah, I’m trying to outcrap my “sweet” description. So what?) Around the beginning of this decade, I listened to this album so much that I wore the cd out. I never got a new copy though and I forgot about it until I recently found it on emusic. I was pleasantly surprised to hear that it hasn’t lost any of the warm atmosphere I remember. The standout songs (”The Kindness of Strangers”, “Punk as Fuck”, “Choir Vandals”) still made me feel the same sort of happiness as before. However I was not aware of how terrible the drumming is on this album. I don’t think it’s possible for “The Kindness of Strangers” to have any more generic/shitty drums. Still, this is a great album.
Rocket From the Crypt - The State of the Art is on Fire/Hot Charity
The fact that I never checked these guys out until now seems a little weird to me. I like Hot Snakes, Drive Like Jehu and Pitchfork. Why have I never checked out Reis’ other huge band? I chalk it up to their name. I sometimes (incorrectly) decide what a band sounds like based on their name alone. Like how I used to think Husker Du sounded like Hanoi Rocks (wtf amirite!?). I always assumed that RFTC sounded like Bosstones lite, but these two records are content to just be sleazy rock and roll. There’s really not a bad song on either of these albums. There’s really nothing more to say other than that. Speaking of Hanoi Du…
Sugar - File Under Easy Listening
I’m sure Bob Mould disciples can do this record much more justice than I. There are probably thesis papers that have been written about the musical merits of Sugar in relation to Husker Du and the music scene in general. Shut up you fucking nerds. Why does it have to be all academic? Why can’t you just say “This is a good album. I highly recommend it.” Why do you have to use words like seminal? I hate that word. Look the first song, “Gift”, pretty much establishes that you’re about to hear a great album. From then on it’s all distorted guitars and great song writing. Go listen to this record.
Masta Ace - Slaughtahouse
I have wanted to revisit this album for years. I used to have it on cassette and, since it’s not humanly possible to listen to cassettes anymore, I haven’t heard it in years. Honestly, it was worth the wait. Some hip hop albums from the early 90’s sound ancient next to later releases but this album hasn’t aged a bit since ‘93. Ace’s denouncing of fake bullshit thugs on this album is still relevant and the beats remain fresh and innovative. Shit, half the title track is parody and it ends up being better than most of the genuine releases it’s mocking. Proof.
The Glands - s/t
I got a couple of tracks off this album back when Napster was still around and recently found it on emusic. It’s totally an album I never expected to find again, but here it is. I don’t know what else to say about it. It’s a nice mellow, interesting indie rock album that got lost in the shuffle. Shit, I bet most of the people who know about this dude only know because they live in the same city or something. Anyway, I probably like it more than anyone else would just because it’s tied to memories of hanging out with my wife when we first met. *cough*fukin’ qweah*cough*.
Lightning Bolt - Beautiful Rainbow
A friend of mine suggested this album to me and told me that it was “the most rocking album of the year”. Boy did I think she was full of shit! These dudes have been a sort of musical nemesis of mine for years because the first (and only) time I listened to this album made me feel like my brain was eating a bunch of shit, puking it up and then eating it again over and over again. Cut to 2007: I decided to write a review for this very site that would finally make people realize how shitty this band is. Well guess who is a little bit of a hypocrite? This album is actually alright and probably didn’t deserve my scorn all those years. “Dracula Mountain” is a pretty awesome song and there’s a couple more that aren’t too shabby either. What a fucking letdown.
Metallica - Kill ‘Em All
Did you know these guys used to be good and that even though everyone points to “Master of Puppets” as their crowning achievement I think it is sort of overrated and that this album is superior? Okay, just checking.
NUMBER TWO - PHANTOM HOURGLASS FOR THE DS
“Lookie what I found in your pooper!”
Admittedly I am a Zelda fanboy and not really as hardcore about gaming as I used to be (OMG WTF CANCEL YOUR SHIZZ ACCOUNT AND DIE!). Still, this is shaping up to be a great addition to the series. The combination of innovative controls and the continuation of the underrated Windwaker story line have completely sucked me in. One of my favorite parts of the past two Zelda games (This and Twilight Princess) has been how intuitive the controls are. The Wii and the DS are pushing the way that games are going to be played in the future. It’s a fresh change from the whole d-pad/joystick controls of the past. Although I have to admit, it took me some time to figure out how to get the third crest on my Sea Chart. Whatever, I’m not that great about talking about games with any sort of insight so I’m not even going to try anymore. “Fantom Ourglass rulsz!~ LOL!”
NUMBER THREE - CLARK AND MICHAEL INTERNET SHOW
“I mean, why should we make a golden necklace to drape around a neck that nobody watches?”
Clark and Michael is one of those shows that rewards repeated viewings. It’s these little subtle touches that make the series so tight. Really I’d say that this series was better than just about all the sitcoms thrown at us by clueless television executives over the past year. There are countless versions of the same tired format being churned out by the networks, while high quality shows get relegated to the internet or wither on the vine completely. Like the Fantasy Football script I co-wrote. I was supposed to be driving a solid-gold Testarossa by now. I wrote it in my goals journal and everything. Thanks for crushing this poor orphan’s dream, corporate America.
NUMBER FOUR - NEW ALBUMS
“Futuristic Hipster”
Battles - Mirrored
This easily ended up being my favorite album of the year and honestly people probably wish I’d just shut the hell up about it. I really wanted to write review of it but I wasn’t even kind of up to the task. It’s an album that is complex and accessible all at once and there’s no way I would do it justice. Look man, it’s good. Either you like it or you don’t.
Big Business - Here Come the Waterworks
Another album I reviewed for this site, albeit poorly with lots of lyrics quoted. Well like Levar Burton’s little fuck minions said “Don’t take *my* word for it!” Check it out yourself.
Fiest - The Reminder
Kevin Drew - Spirit If…
It was a good year for Broken Social Scene members.
A Place to Bury Strangers - s/t
This band is one of those ones who wear their influences on their sleeve but don’t sound like cheap knock offs. I was really surprised by this album. I don’t really have much to say beyond that.
Liars - Liars
Before this album, I disliked everything I heard by these guys. However, this album really clicked with me. It helps that, in my opinion, some of the songs sound like something Q and not U might have put out if they didn’t break up. “Sailing to Byzantium” in particular.
Coliseum - No Salvation
Originally I had the new LCD Soundsystem here, but I dropped it for two reasons. One: Do you really need to hear about that album anymore? If you have the internet you know that people like that album. Two: Even though I picked up this album in December, I’ve already listened to it 15 times. They also fall into the old discoveries section, as their cover of Danzig’s “Am I Demon” is pretty awesome.
NUMBER FIVE - METROID PRIME/MARIO GALAXY
“Would every game be better with like-likes? You decide.”
Man, it’s so awesome to have a couple of really good games for the Wii. Not that there haven’t been any, but like I said earlier I don’t spend as much time gaming as I used to. The only gamefor the Wii that I’ve really spent a ton of time with has been Twilight Princess. Something has to be really suck me in these days to get me to play it a ton. Both of these games did just that. Even though Metroid is more of the same, the Wii controls make it so much more fun to play. Mario Galaxy on the other hand, like pretty much everyone has said, is just crazy. Every time I play it takes me a couple of minutes to get used to the motion sickness I get running around these planets. That’s a good thing.
NUMBER SIX - THE 2007 WORLD SERIES
“Seventh innin’ streeeATCH kid! Bin waitin’ awl game fa this shit! SWEEEEET! KARAAALIAAAAAAAAAAAAHN! BAH BAH BAH! YEEEAAAHH! AW SHIT! Heah comes the wave again! Love that fahkin thing! HEY! TAKE OWF YA FAHKIN’ HAT DURING “GOD BLESS AMAHRICA!” YOU A FAHKIN’ YANKEES FAN OR SUMPTHIN!? YA GUY! It’s Pahpelbon time! I fahking love that kid! Look I ain’t qweah, but I’d give him a hummah. You wouldn’t? Yaw outta ya tree, dude! It’d be like blowing God and that’s nawt gay. It’s in the bible, look it up ya fahkin’ tool.”
To answer your question yes, we all talk like this.
NUMBER SEVEN - WEIGHT LOSS
“Nonedible eclair. Not to be taken orally.”
I road the weight lollercoaster this year, both getting as fat and as trim as I ever have been all in a calendar year. How did I do it? Internment camp. I mean Weight Watchers. I would put on my shabby housecoat and shuffle down to the local meeting, eyes filled with fat and shame. I’d tell the other housewives how sorry I was that I ate those éclairs. I tried to resist them I’d say, but goddamn they were just so delicious looking. I’d go to bed and have hot, sweaty dreams about my secret lovers’ dark skin and silky cream. I wanted them in my mouth, I’d tell them and I wouldn’t stop until I had them all. And that my friends, is the last time I was invited to Career Day. Where was I? Or right, weight loss. Yeah I ate right and worked out. It’s not rocket science, noobs.
Christ, this list took forever to write. I mean really. It’s ten days into 2008 for cripes sake. Resolution for next year: be less ambitious. Keep your fingers crossed for me.
*This is a total lie. Seriously, if anyone has seen my wife and daughter, please call Crimestoppers.
As far as underrated games go on the Wii, nothing seems more over looked than Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn. The fire Emblem series is still relatively new to the U.S. shores. After a handful of Gameboy releases, and a Gamecube title, the Wii is now graced with a fine game from this series.
Fire Emblem doesn’t use any of the Wii controller’s fun functions, nor is it a revolutionary game, however, there are two features that make this my favorite game from 2007. First, this is a sequel to the Gamecube Fire Emblem. Therefore, to get the full game experience you should first play the Gamecube game and complete that. This can easily be done seeing how that game is cheap ($20) and easy to find (Amazon.com if your local game store doesn’t have it). Also, if you have a save file from the Gamecube, the Wii will recognize it and give you bonus stats for your characters.
Second, the story and characters make this game the best in the series (my opinion of course). This game is rich with character development and interlocking story lines. There is a plethora of characters to pick from and each has a unique personality. It is up to you whom you choose to groom into strong warriors and whom you let whither away. The story evolves from one group of characters to another. Each group faces its own missions before the true story is unveiled and the groups congeal. If you want an excellent RPG that is well worth the money, pick up Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn for the Wii. It is a long game and you can play the first for added replay.
2. Prince - Planet Earth
Prince is back! This time he unleashed Planet Earth on well… Planet Earth. Prince has released three albums in the new millennium, but Planet Earth is the best of the trio. Without a doubt, Prince is the most musically talented man the U.S. has ever produced (don’t believe me, look into it) and he continues to prove that point. This album is as diverse as they come. Prince pulls out the pop, the rock, the ballads, and the R&B. The melodies are catchy and the rhythm is perfect. The man in purple keeps etching his face in the history of music. Like him or hate him, his legacy continues through 2007.
3. New England Patriots
16-0. Only the fourth ever undefeated NFL team in the regular season. I’m not a Patriots fan, but I did find myself cheering them on towards perfection this fall. It is commendable that they have done what so few have. In addition, they broke many team records along the way. 2007 has given us one of the greatest sports teams of all time, thank you year…thank you.
4. Van Halen reunion
As much as I don’t care for Diamond David Lee Roth, I was very excited for this reunion and tour. There is a fire that Van Halen lost in 1984 when Roth and the band split. But now that fire is back (no offense Hagar). The tour sold out and got rave reviews. I was not able to get tickets but hopefully they can last long enough for a second tour before they start trying to kill each other, oh, and Eddie needs to stay away from the bottle.
5. AC/DC Plug Me In - DVD
This little gem comes in a two DVD or three DVD set. Plug Me In is a collection of AC/DC live performances and interviews that span the thirty plus years of this band’s existence. This is an awesome collection that gives the viewer a glimpse at why AC/DC is considered one of the greatest live bands ever. There are over sixty performances in this boxset.
DVD one goes back to 1975 and original singer Bon Scott with the band’s first appearance on TV, and continues through until 1979. DVD two picks up with Brian Johnson at the mic. Tearing through new songs and old, the band clearly doesn’t miss a beat and goes on straight through 2003 - performing with The Rolling Stones. You also get rare interviews, tour promo films and alternate live versions. DVD three is called “Between The Cracks”. This is bonus material not included in the regular two-disc set. Included are both Bon and Brian eras, featuring the never-before-seen 1983 show from the Houston Summit.
6. LEGO Star Wars: the Complete Saga - Wii, PS3
Never has saving the galaxy been so much fun and cute. LEGO Star Wars is a blast to play and is loaded with replay value. You can unlock your favorite characters to play through each of the six episodes. It is a simple game to pick up and play. I don’t know why this game is so addicting, but it’s great to play with another person as you run around each level trying to complete the many sidequests this game offers. It deserves at least a rent if you are a Star Wars fan.
7. Live Free or Die Hard
John McClain is back, and he is pissed! The latest Die Hard movie is packed full of violence, action, and entertainment (she’s down an elevator shaft with an SUV up her ass). It was a fun movie that lives up to its predecessors. It follows the same style too: some crazy guy tries to take over something and get money; McClain goes through hell to stop him, a whole bunch of stuff happens along the way that involves McClain swearing, and the day is saved. Don’t mess with it if it isn’t broken.
I thought really hard about this. I’m thinking I’m going to go with the 7 biggest events of my year, be they uplifting or heartbreaking, and the songs that go along with them. Each with a brief explanation of them. Some of this was pretty wrenching for me, but if I being able to get the bad out with the good is almost like a sense of closure for me. So, without further ado, Tym Falk’s highest and lowest of 2007. (more…)
