Game Hunt (11/29/09): Clearanced Wii Titles, Portable Deals, & More

Posted on Sunday 29 November 2009

Although Good-Evil was quiet this week due to the holiday, I was still keeping a vigilant eye out for any Black Friday related game deals for this column. While I ended up with quite a nice little bounty, none of these were any more than clearance-priced items that I happened to pick up, and most of the Black Friday deals I saw were pretty disappointing. Regardless, I walked away with some very nice games. Read on for more… (more…)

Leftovers: Ultimate Cuts, Terrible Remakes, and Sleepaway Revivals

Posted on Wednesday 25 November 2009

As Thanksgiving draws near, I feel compelled to share some Leftovers early. Here’s some impressions of some movies I have seen over the past few weeks that I didn’t really feel like extending out into full reviews; Watchmen: The Ultimate Cut, Day of the Dead (2008), and Return to Sleepaway Camp. (more…)

Game Hunt (11/22/09): GB Games, Saturn Stick, Fire N Ice, & More

Posted on Sunday 22 November 2009

This last week was pretty average for me: I found a decent amount of games, had a couple trips where I found nothing, and also ran across some truly hard-to-find items. I actually stumbled upon a very rare NES gem early in my hunting, and was never able to match the awesomeness of that as the week went on. Still, I’m not disappointed with this haul in the least.

I kept almost exclusively to thrift stores this time around, with the exception of an excursion to a Canadian game store that yielded two decently priced Game Boy games amidst their rows and rows of overpriced games. $25 for a loose Super Castlevania IV cartridge? Aww, come on!!! (more…)

Pro Wrestling

Posted on Friday 20 November 2009

Pro Wrestling is a game that I was introduced to at Loyal Heights Community Center, which is the place I went to spend the day during the summer when my parents were working. I was nine when I started going there, so I was still a little too young to be trusted by myself at home. There were many activities for us to participate in, but my favorite was playing Nintendo – the more things change, right?

Of the few games they had there, one of them was Pro Wrestling. I believe the others were Super Mario Bros., Track and Field, Ice Hockey, Stinger, and they eventually got an Excitebike cabinet. Even with that array of games available, I spent most of the time playing Pro Wrestling. I’m curious as to whether my youthful enthusiasm for the game has held up over the years, so let’s find out! (more…)

Game Hunt (11/15/09): Monster Haul!

Posted on Sunday 15 November 2009

I thought it might be hard to follow up last week’s haul, and while I didn’t find anything approaching the rarity and wow-factor of the Miracle Piano, I found some really neat stuff, and lots of it. Not to mention more no-brainer deals that fell into my lap in the last couple days. Last week also marked my return to the crap shoot that is the pawn shop. Deals can be found there, no doubt, but often times all you’re greeted with is a handful of overpriced common cartridges and way too many Playstation 2 and Xbox games. They came through for me this time, though. Without further ado, I bring to you my last two weeks of game hunting! Brace yourself, this one is a bit larger than the last… (more…)

Soul Blazer

Posted on Friday 13 November 2009

I had never heard of this game until rather recently. Maybe a year now. But I found out that one of my favorite games, Illusion of Gaia, is considered a “spiritual sequel” to it. So I decided to give the game a spin.

It’s actually a pretty decent game. It’s not going to top any of my lists, but it’s a solid title in the SNES library. The colors are plentiful and vibrantish. It has some decent visual effects that go at certain points in the game. The gameplay is fun, for the most part. The story is pretty decent, if a little preachy. But that’s not very indepth, is it? Beautiful Katamari

Posted on Thursday 12 November 2009

So here at Good-Evil, I’ve been reviewing (and anticipating) Katamari games since they started coming stateside. I was there the day Katamari Damacy came out and the bemused EB Games clerk quipped that he’ll never understand why people buy this wacky Japanese shit. At that time, it was a $20 dollar budget PS2 title that became a huge cult hit. Since then, there’s been an equally enjoyable sequel, an acceptable PSP translation, some random cell phone translations…and this version for Xbox 360. As the series has progressed, it has lost its original creator, and the price of entry has steadily risen. All that being said, how does this one fare? (more…)
