GE;TS (03.05): Sleepytime Trio – 30 Equals
By Sherv Tuesday, 10 Nov 2009

“Good-Evil; The Soundtrack” is a weekly feature that showcases an editor’s song pick complete with a small write-up and a YouTube video or streaming version of the song. This week’s selection by Sherv is Sleepytime Trio – “30 Equals”.

My first exposure to Sleepytime Trio was through The Minibosses during a basement show in 2000 wherein they performed “Jesus Extract”. It was my first exposure to such cacophonous music and screaming vocals, and I was immediately ensnared. Their discography + live tracks are contained on the album “Memory Minus” which showcases the range of their repertoire, from loud screeching songs to diminished mopey tracks.

The synergy of both extremes coalesces perfectly in “30 Equals”. Much like their other songs, the lyrics are obfuscated beyond my interpretation skills, but that is of little significance when the vocal tone is so emotive and full of pathos. Once the guitars finish building up at 1:53 they begin to ping-pong back and forth with the vocals, creating an escalation of frustration within me with each verse. Each lyrical outburst is encased by a (literally) rocking guitar riff, a repetition that is wearing and taxing; the music, strongly supported by the drums, is energizing but the vocals soundtragic, a complementation that I find emotionally draining.

Written in the mid- to late-90s, “30 Equals” is what I believe to be true “screamo”, a statement I imagine will unfortunately provoke knee-jerk groans and eye-rolls. Your loss.

It’s so nice of me
To drag you along

Selected a memory
Of unbelievable fabric

Inventing a whiplash switch
To put you backed
In a corner

Is it worth waiting for?
Not enough
Of everything
That I do not want

I gave you a part
I could not
Turn and stand for you to play

Red eyes
Life size
Any crime
Tames my

Made your bed for nothing
Paint in lead for…

Apt chops; form slop; tell the cops; what rocks;
Paint in lead for nothing
He was not bred for

Right side maybe
Paint in lead for nothing
Graffiti’s not lazy

Time it ties to redden eyes
Goodbyes will fly
And you’ll make ice flow

Not quiiiiite my cup of tea, but I could see myself wanting to listen to this again in the right mood. Good review nonetheless, told me what to expect, and that’s what I got.
