“Good-Evil; The Soundtrack” is a weekly feature that showcases an editor’s song pick complete with a small write-up and a YouTube video or streaming version of the song. This week’s selection by James Spairana is “Nevermore – Beyond Within”.
Nevermore – Beyond Within (Beyond Within begins at about 0:50)
The year was 2001. I think. I, but a boy of 18 (or possibly 19 at the time), wandered into a local record store, hoping to buy some decent hard rock, perhaps something that had been receiving a lot of radio play recently. I headed over to the sampling booth and selected whichever album it was by Drowning Pool that had recently come out. However, the employees of this record store had ideas of their own on what qualifies as good music, and they were playing it fairly loudly. I didn’t want to turn up the headphones loud enough to hurt my ears, so Nevermore was still quite audible over Drowning Pool. I was annoyed at first, until I thought “hey, wait. . .this is pretty heavy!”
I walked up to the counter and timidly asked what was playing over the store’s speakers, and the cashier produced Nevermore’s album “Dreaming Neon Black”. The cover protrayed a hand protruding from a dull, grayish-brown landscape that I didn’t examine too closely. Given that the most metal album cover I had seen at the time was the cartoonish electric chair on Ride the Lightning, I wasn’t quite sure what to think; but having heard the music already, I was sold. In retrospect, buying an album based on one song was a fairly bad habit of mine at the time, but damned if it didn’t pay off this time: beyond
my then-beloved Metallica and a smidgen of Megadeth, I knew nothing of real metal.
Beyond Within was my first foray into metal that was beneath the radar of mainstream rock radio; eight years and nearly 200 albums later, I’m quite secure in referring to myself as a metalhead. Regardless of any infidelity I indulge in with pop, disco, or video game music, metal will always be my one true genre. And in a way, Beyond Within is responsible for that.
